Course Description

This course is intended for Maine dental hygienists who want to strengthen their knowledge of dental pain management. This course covers the indications for using local anesthesia in clinical practice; including both topical and injectable anesthetics, and offers guidance on selecting appropriate anesthetics for preventive procedures. Participants will explore the distinctions between nerve blocks and infiltrations, along with foundational concepts in neurophysiology, biotransformation, and the clinical application of local anesthetics for effective pain control.

Course Objectives

  • Evaluate when local anesthetic is an appropriate option for managing dental pain during preventive procedures.

  • Explain foundational concepts of neurophysiology and biotransformation as they relate to the use of local anesthesia.

  • Differentiate between nerve blocks and infiltrations and identify which nerve bundles remain anesthetized for longer durations.

  • Assess whether topical or injectable local anesthetic represents the standard of care for pain management in preventive dental procedures.
